This week in the Shack

Here is the set list for the last Shotgun Shack show for 2008. This has been an horrific year for myself, and so many of my friends, and it seemed appropriate to go out with a big set of party music to welcome in the new year, and celebrate putting a stake in the heart of the old one.

Happy new year. To quote Wil Wheaton, may it be filled with plenty of the stuff you like, none of the stuff you don't like, and may you spend it with the people you love. Thanks for listening.

This week in the Shack

I started this radio station in late May because I have such love for the music and wanted to share it with others. I don't think, however, I ever expected to see that I would regularly have listeners from all over the world, and that the number of listener hours on the station would climb every month. Unlike spinning music in the dance scene, running the Shack is a very solitary hobby, and it's immensely gratifying to know that there are people out there listening and enjoying it.

I hope all of you out there have a wonderful holiday season.

The Hot Nut Riveters

I caught the Hot Nut Riveters' gospel brunch at Maria's this afternoon. The new incarnation of the band is Guy Forsyth, Will Landin, and Rob Hooper (Guy's regular trio); Wammo, Nevada Newman, Famous Jake, and Charlie King of the Asylum Street Spankers; and Oliver Steck of Giant City. Hell of a lineup. Hell of a show, too.

They'll be doing at least two more gospel brunches at Maria's - January 18 and February 15. Go check them out of you like good gospel and gospel blues.

Guy and the Hot Nut Riveters will be playing this Sunday at Maria's Taco X-Press this Sunday at 12:45 pm, and at the same place and time on January 18 & February 15.

This week in the Shack

I was at a party Saturday night, and a friend and I were talking about all the shows we've learned about either after the fact or after tickets had sold out. She's fairly new to Austin, and commented that, while she's missed a lot of stuff, every blues show she's made it to in town has been absolutely amazing. And it made me sit back and think about how lucky we really are in both our hometown musicians and those just up the road in Dallas, Houston, and elsewhere in the state. This week's program, therefore, is a collection of blues, soul, and funk spanning almost eighty years of Texas music history - from Blind Willie Johnson in the late 1920s to last week's T Bird and the Breaks' release. (And, yes, I still need to add some Blind Lemon Jefferson, Texas Alexander, and some of the other early blues masters to my library...I'm working on it.)

I hope you dig it.

Upcoming Guy Forsyth shows, and send Guy birthday wishes

Guy Forsyth is turning 40 this weekend, and playing a birthday gig at Gruene Hall this Sunday at 4:00 p.m. If you'd like to send him a birthday greeting, send an email to nikki AT titanmusicgroup DOT COM by tomorrow, November 28, and they'll put it on his card.

Also, Guy will be playing at the Saxon on Friday the 28th, and will be doing two shows with the Asylum Street Spankers on Saturday, Dec. 6 at the Cactus Cafe. The Cactus is a pretty small venue, so if you plan to go, you should get your tickets in advance.

Hope you're all having a wonderful Thanksgiving, and check back here by the end of the weekend, when I'll have a new show up.

This week in the Shack

The ninth annual Austin Lindy Exchange was last weekend, which meant that I spent all of my time dancing, deejaying, listening to fantastic local bands, and hanging out with friends from near and far. I had a fabulous time, although my bad knee has been unspeakably unhappy with me since Saturday night. I'm also tired as hell - the earliest I've made it to bed since everyone started arriving on Thursday has been around 4:00 a.m., and the latest was considerably later than that. It was really good to hang out with people, including some of my favourite deejays, and to reconnect with the dance scene, given that I'd been going through some burnout as of late.

I spent a good portion of my free time on Saturday working on a new set for the Shack instead of napping; however, this is not that set. This set is based off of my last dj shift at ALX last night (this morning, rather). More than any of the other dances, I love being at the final afterhours, when the excitement of the event has more or less gone away and things are winding down. It's when the sense of community I feel is the strongest, as people say their goodbyes, and there's often a wonderfully laid-back vibe to the event. I spun for the first hour, then Greg and Tina kept such a fine feel to the music that it was hard to leave, even though I was bone-tired and my leg was hurting too much to dance on the concrete floor of the venue; so I just hung out and chatted with friends from town, friends from out of town, and people I'd just met at the event. It's the kind of evening (or in this case, early morning) that you want to hang onto, and you can head for home carrying that sweet mellow feeling in your chest.

I had to balance the music between people who were looking for blues and those who were looking to lindy hop, so the blues in this set is mostly not the postwar Delta, Chicago, and Texas blues that usually make up the majority of my blues sets. There's a lot of jazz here, even in the blues songs, along with some nice hammond-driven tunes, a little bit of soul, and a little bit of gospel. The first fifteen tracks in the list are my set from the night, and I just tried to keep the groove going when adding on the next two hours.

As always, I hope you dig it.

2. Gary Clark, Jr. - Blue Light Boogie (2:59)

In which there are delays

The new show will be up tomorrow or Wednesday night. Next week's will probably also be delayed because of Austin Lindy Exchange and the Thanksgiving holiday.

Something for your ears this spring

Local bluesman Seth Walker's new album, "Leap of Faith", should drop on March 3, 2009.

(Also, in the event that you're not coming to listen to me dj tonight, go see Seth at Momo's, and catch him again on Sunday at the Parish.)

Daptone Records catalog on sale

(h/t Oliver at Soul-Sides)

The entire Daptone .mp3 catalog is on sale at Amazon for a limited time for $6.99 each. There's also a free 14-track sampler available for download from Amazon here.

Daptone is only one of two labels (the other being Stax) putting out new soul music where just seeing the label's logo will make me check an album out. Among their artists are Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, Nicole Willis & The Soul Investigators, and The Sugarman 3. If you dig the retro-soul movement, this sale is a great time to check out their remarkable collection of talent.

This week in the Shack

It's been a little while since I put a brand-new show up on the Shack. Things have been happening, both in my real life and my day job, that made me too tired to do more than bring back shows from early last summer, and for that, I apologize.

This set is a love letter to two cities - one is the city in which I live, and the other is a place to which I've never been as an adult, but which has provided me with much of the music, fiction, history, and food that nurture my soul. If you're a fan of New Orleans R&B, soul, and funk, you already know who a lot of the musicians in the set are - Dr. John, Allen Toussaint, The Meters (and several other bands with members of the Neville clan), Jon Cleary, Henry Butler. And some of the old chestnuts are here as well - "Junco Partner", "Iko Iko", "Cissy Strut". But there are, I hope, some surprises - covers of Marvin Gaye and Creedence Clearwater Revival, the only song (if I recall correctly) that Lil' Queenie and the Percolaters ever recorded, some older stuff from the prolific Dr. John - and a handful of Austin funk and soul artists: Mingo Fishtrap, Papa Mali, Brownout, and The Ugly Americans (featuring Bob Schneider from before his singer-songwriter days).

As always, I hope you dig it.

Upcoming Austin Blues Society membership meeting

From the ABS:

Place: The Victory Grill
1104 East 11th St, Austin, TX

All FREE to ABS members! Bring your card or sign up at the door.

The Victory Grill is a historic music venue. The nightclub was on the Chitlin' Circuit and hosted famous African-American acts such as Bobby “Blue” Bland, Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, W. C. Clark and B. B. King during the age of racial segregation in the United States. Johnny Holmes, a booking agent and band manager, opened the Victory Grill on Victory over Japan Day, 1945 as a restaurant and bar for black soldiers returning from the war. Holmes was also familiar with both the burgeoning Texas blues and jazz scenes, and soon, the club became known for its music as well as its food and drink. The club began attracting music lovers, no matter what their race.

During its heyday in the 1950s, most of the popular national blues, rhythm and blues, and jazz acts that played Austin performed at the Victory Grill. Ike & Tina Turner, James Brown, Etta James, Billie Holiday, Chuck Berry and Janis Joplin were some of the artists who graced the stage.

This week in the Shack

Given that this Friday will mark the three-year anniversary of Katrina tearing the hell out of the Gulf Coast, this week's set has a number of songs about the hurricane and life after, plus Marcia Ball's version of Randy Newman's Louisiana 1927, about a devastating flood, and one about another disaster that inspired a number of blues songs, the 1940 Rhythm Club fire in Natchez, Mississippi (represented here by Howlin' Wolf's The Natchez Burnin').

New Orleans, and New Orleans musicians, are still rebuilding. If you're interested in helping out, I encourage you to donate to any of a number of organizations out there helping, including the Tipitina's Foundation and the New Orleans Musicians Relief Fund. Ch-ch-changes

I've decided that the plan of alternating sets of soul and blues on the radio station is too restrictive (as partially evidenced by my failure to abide by it over the last two months), so I'm jettisoning it. The Shotgun Shack will remain a station for soul, blues, and funk music, but without any set pattern in its sets.

The program will continue to change weekly-ish, and I'll have sets spotlighting New Orleans music, gospel, and delta/piedmont/country blues coming up over the next month or so.

Saturday, July 12, 2008

I stumbled back into the house after Austin Blues Party shortly after 4 a.m. on Monday morning. In the preceding seventy-nine hours, I had danced for approximately twenty-four (including three and a half hours deejaying), taken almost eleven hours of classes, and slept for around fifteen hours (including several short afternoon naps), and had an incredible time. It's been almost a week, and I'm not recovered yet - although that probably has something to do with deejaying at Kick Butt Blues last night until just this side of two in the morning, too.

My live dj gigs have suddenly picked up considerably for the next few weeks - I'll be spinning at events next Friday and Saturday (the latter in College Station) and the following Thursday and Saturday. I intend to keep updating the Shack with new playlists roughly on a weekly basis - but if I fall behind in the next few weeks, it's because of these gigs.

And, speaking of playlists, I've put a new one up in the Shack. Because of all the fabulous dancers I met last weekend - locals who were new to the blues scene and visitors from across the country - I decided to break with my pattern and do another all-Texas set. I'm all about spreading the word about local music, and our musical heritage; and also, anything that helps persuade out-of-town dancers to return is a good thing.

This set again focuses primarily on the blues, stretching from early artists Blind Willie Johnson and Lightnin' Hopkins up to the present day. There's a little bit of soul, courtesy of southern soul man Joe Tex and soul/blues crossover artists like W.C. Clark and Ruthie Foster, and just a bit of gospel. I've also added in some roots music, because it's next to impossible for me to think about Texas music without artists like Steve Earle, Guy Clark, and, especially, Ray Wylie Hubbard, so many of whose songs are about local people and places. Don't mind Ray's surliness in "Screw You, We're From Texas" - we really do like those of y'all from out of state; it's just his way of reminding you that we think we're a little bit different down here. One day perhaps I'll do an all-Texas roots show so I can send out some James McMurtry, Chip Taylor & Carrie Rodriguez, Eliza Gilkyson, and their like; but until then, well, maybe you just ought to come down to Austin and hear them playing around town.

Here's the new set list; I hope you dig it:

1. Blind Willie Johnson - When The War Was On (3:01)
2. Boxcar Preachers - Can't Get That Stuff No Mo' (3:04)
3. Lightnin' Hopkins - That Mean Old Twister (3:09)

Friday, July 4, 2008

Austin Blues Party 2 began last night, and I'm already tired. I got to the Syndicate's weekly dance at the Fed at about 9:15 last night, and left Kick Butt Blues shortly after 3:00 this morning. I'm running on five and a half hours of sleep and an enormous quantity of caffeine and motrin, and it's just day one. One day I'm going to have to admit that I'm almost forty and my body can't take this kind of abuse any more, but I don't plan for it to be today.

In honor of this weekend's four-day celebration of the blues, I've put a new blues program up on the Shack.

The new show is on the station now...a package of tasty blues to help usher in the last two weeks before the Austin Blues Party. I was very fortunate in that Thain and Keith, two of my favourite local blues djs, spun at Kick Butt Blues last Friday. I sometimes feel that I play a very limited selection of artists when I dj for blues events, and their sets inspired me to go digging into some of the stuff that I don't play nearly as often as I should, like Jimmy Rogers and Otis Rush.

Juneteenth blues show at The Oaks

Here in Texas, June 19th is celebrated as Juneteenth, in commemoration of the date Texas slaves learned of the ending of slavery. To that end, the Austin Blues Society, in conjunction with The Oaks, is holding a Juneteenth festival this Saturday, June 14th featuring figures from the East Austin blues scene.

Performers include:
  • W.C. Clark and his band
  • Blues Boy Hubbard & the Texas East Side Kings
  • Hosea Hargrove & the Roadrunners
  • Matthew Robinson Band
  • John Gaar Band
There will also be food vendors and a screening of a documentary about the history of the blues in Austin. Proceeds to benefit the Carver Center.

Tickets are $15 ($12 for Austin Blues Society Members), and children under 12 get in free. Everything starts at 5:00 pm.

Where: The Oaks
10206 FM 973 North,
Manor, TX

A return, briefly

I'm back from the cool heights of Colorado and into the heat of the Texas summer once again. Between another trip out of town later this month and Austin Blues Party 2 over the 4th of July, the radio station may only update every ten days instead of weekly. However, I'll still be alternating programs of soul & funk with programs of blues (plus, at some point soon, I'll do a set dedicated to New Orleans soul, funk, R&B, and blues, and another of gospel blues).

The newest mix, all soul with more of a sixties focus than the last soul set, is broadcasting now.

Gigs: June & July

My live dj schedule for the next couple of months:

6/12/08 Austin Swing Syndicate, side room 10:30-11:30 (overflow room for band dance)

Some slight delay

I'm on vacation in Colorado at the moment, and didn't quite get the new set finished today, so the new show won't go up on the radio station until Sunday or Monday.

"You may all go to Hell, and I will go to Texas"

David Crockett famously said those words to his former colleagues in the Tennessee legislature in 1835. Less than a year later, he died fighting for Texas independence at the Alamo.

I'm told that we're a little different, we Texans. Perhaps it's because we were our own nation before we were part of the United States. Perhaps it's our anomolous geographic position - we're not really part of the South, nor the Southwest, nor the Midwest, although we border all three regions.

Along with that difference comes a musical heritage of incredible depth, from ragtime professor Scott Joplin to electric guitar pioneer Eddie Durham; from living legends like Willie Nelson and Augie Meyers to Janis Joplin and Stevie Ray Vaughan, who left us far too soon.

With that in mind, this week's broadcast features solely Texas blues, soul, and gospel musicians - those who grew up here or lived here for some period of their careers. It's by no means a complete list - before I do this theme again, I'll make sure to add some Janis Joplin, Blind Lemon Jefferson, and Mance Lipscomb to my collection - but I think it presents a nice diversity of talent.

I hope you dig it.

(And if you've come here looking for the soul music from last week, check back next week; my plan, as much as there is one, is to alternate between soul/funk and blues weekly.)

Throwing wide the doors

Welcome to The Shotgun Shack. Come in, make yourselves at home. There's not much to sit on besides the floor, I'm afraid, but we like to keep as much of the space clear for dancing as possible. There's ice water in the cooler out the back door, and plenty of rum on the counter, over by those mason jars.

If you've come here from live365, then you know that this is the blog for my netradio station, also called The Shotgun Shack. If you've come from elsewhere, I'd invite you to check out the station from the link on the sidebar.

I'm your host, the Reverend Shady Glenn. After a little over eight years deejaying in the Austin, Texas, swing and blues dance scene, I decided I wanted another venue to spin my soul, blues, funk, and gospel music, and a platform outside of my regular blog to write about music; so I built this shack. It's not much to look at yet, but I'm hoping that will change over time.
