This week in the Shack

Given that this Friday will mark the three-year anniversary of Katrina tearing the hell out of the Gulf Coast, this week's set has a number of songs about the hurricane and life after, plus Marcia Ball's version of Randy Newman's Louisiana 1927, about a devastating flood, and one about another disaster that inspired a number of blues songs, the 1940 Rhythm Club fire in Natchez, Mississippi (represented here by Howlin' Wolf's The Natchez Burnin').

New Orleans, and New Orleans musicians, are still rebuilding. If you're interested in helping out, I encourage you to donate to any of a number of organizations out there helping, including the Tipitina's Foundation and the New Orleans Musicians Relief Fund. I'll try to get some links to these on the sideboard of the blog this weekend.

Ch-ch-changes

I've decided that the plan of alternating sets of soul and blues on the radio station is too restrictive (as partially evidenced by my failure to abide by it over the last two months), so I'm jettisoning it. The Shotgun Shack will remain a station for soul, blues, and funk music, but without any set pattern in its sets.

The program will continue to change weekly-ish, and I'll have sets spotlighting New Orleans music, gospel, and delta/piedmont/country blues coming up over the next month or so.
